What is Temp to Perm & How Does it Work?

What is Temp to Perm?

Temp to Perm, also known as temporary to permanent, is when a temporary employee, or contract worker, is placed by a staffing agency at a business. If the temp employee does a good job, likes the business, and the business likes the work they are doing then they are more likely to be hired directly by the business as a “permanent” employee of the business.

Part of what we do at Indispensable Health is to provide pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to pharmacies in need of talent. In this way, we act as a staffing agency. Over the years, many of our pharmacists and pharmacy technicians have been hired directly by the pharmacies where we placed them.

Three Things that Need to Happen for Temp to Perm Jobs to Come to Fruition:

A desire by both the pharmacy and the pharmacist or pharmacy technician for the arrangement to become more permanent.
An open position at the pharmacy
Pharmacy budget available for the position

We have seen a variety of situations where two of the three above are in place, but not all three, and the Temp to Perm does not happen.

Benefits of Working with a Staffing Agency

This comes back to the benefits of working with a staffing agency. One such benefit is that we are often aware of unadvertised open positions. We have working relationships with pharmacies and they come to us to help solve a staffing need before they advertise the specific positions publically. When we do fill their unadvertised position, sometimes the pharmacist or pharmacy technician does such a great job that the pharmacy wants to hire the person directly. When the three things listed above are in place, the pharmacist or pharmacy technician becomes a full-time, permanent employee at a pharmacy where a position was never advertised.

As a staffing agency that exclusively staffs pharmacy positions, we are thrilled when one of our pharmacists or pharmacy technicians become directly hired by a pharmacy.
