Pre-Interview Tips for Pharmacy Professionals | Tip #3
with Tom Alig | Vice President of Staffing at Indispensable Health
Hi, I am Tom Alig, VP of Staffing with Indispensable Health.
I’ve been recruiting pharmacists and pharmacy technicians since 2004, and I’ve seen the things good candidates do to separate themselves, and I’ve seen the mistakes that some candidates make.
This is the third in a series of short videos on pre-interview tips for pharmacy positions.
Today’s Tip: Details
Your resume looks great. You nailed the cover letter and hit “send” to reply to that ad for a potential new job.
The potential employer contacted you for a phone interview.
You will be asked about your experiences. Oftentimes the interviewer is looking for a detailed answer. For instance, when the interviewer asks, “Tell me about a time when you did this thing,” they want a specific example. Saying, “This happens all the time. I just make sure the patient gets their meds,” does NOT answer the question.
The interviewer wants to know about a specific time, about a specific course of action you took, and what the outcome was.
A great answer would be, “Last Tuesday we had something similar come up. The issue was the medication wasn’t entered correctly in the system. I called the physician to clarify the order. The result is the patient ultimately received the medication they needed in a timely manner. My boss heard about it later and thought I handled the situation effectively.”
One caveat: Make sure you are being truthful!
Obviously, you’re not going to know what questions are going to be asked, but you can still be prepared with stories about great customer service, about helping out a patient, about helping out a pharmacist or technician, about a time when you disagreed with your boss and how you handled it, etc. These prepared stories can then be used to answer the questions that are asked when you are being interviewed.
The bottom line: Talk about the details
